News & Sales Hereford Sale 3rd October 2009 - ResultsPlease find below details of our consignment for the Autumn show and sale on 3rd October and below results for the Breed Sale at Hereford Market on 25th April. It's always good to get the Autumn Show and sale out the way and come home with an empty trailer! In what we would describe as a typical Autumn trade we were pleased with the result. We have found that the commercial trade for bulls has been reducing in the Autumn over the last couple of years and this was evident at Hereford with most bulls being bought be pedigree buyers to a top of 3100gns. Explosive sold for 2000gns to WMJ Pryce, Penmaes, the bull is to be used in a pedigree (established 1973) and commercial herd here. Mr Pryce bought a couple of heifers from us in 2005 and it was great to see him choosing our stock again. Explosive was third in his class. Both of our heifers sold to Mr G Shepherd to help with the establishment of his Moorside herd in the North of England. Jane sold for 1900 gns and Julia for 1600 gns. We were very pleased with this as Mr Shepherd already has one Romany heifer and also a calf by Romany 1 Captain from another heifer that he bought. Jane was second in her class and Julia was fourth.
He has had a very good show career this year. We have only shown him twice and he was first on both occassions (Royal Highland and Scottish National Hereford Show). He is semen tested with good results and also blood tested for BVD, Lepto and IBR. He is vaccinated for BTV, which we had a vet do so he is elegable for export without the necessary 90 day programme had we self vaccinated. He is in the process of being DNA profiled. He has a terrific pedigree being by Crickley 1 Figurehead the 2007 Sire of the Year and out of a cow (Mink 41H U3) by Glenlees Storm past Royal Show Champion and twice Sire of the Year. He has two sister (one full) retained in the herd and another that looks like she will also be. If you are looking for a bull with plenty of meat, performance and pedigree this is the lad for you. A sweet young heifer that would be an asset to an established herd or somebody looking to build a herd. Jane has a terrific structure and body with good performance figures to go with it. Her mother is a young cow who is in her fourth year and has four calves on the ground already. Her sire Baybridge 1 Atlas is a super bull who is full of power and performance. He has left one of our best crops of heifer calves we have ever had this Spring. Jane has never been shown but would be suitable for a breeder looking for some fun next year at the summer shows. A lovely young heifer that oozes sweetness! She is the youngest heifer in the sale and would be great for somebody looking for a start in the breed. She is by Crickley 1 Figurehead, 2007 Sire of the Year, and out of a daughter of Freetown Longfellow (Royal Show Champion 1996) called Julia L46 S20. This cow has produced 8 offspring with 6 currently in different herds. Julia R22 F11 is just a great heifer with a great nature. She was third in her class at the National Poll Show and would be suitable for showing next summer. She would easily manage to calve at two years old if you wished or would be suitable for bulling next summer to calve at two and a half.
We were awarded Reserve Female Champion with Ishbel and she later topped the female sale selling for 2900 gns to Mr Gary Hall of Pinmoor Herefords. We think she will be a useful asset to his up and coming herd. We had a good day with the the bulls as well. Enhance was third in his class and later sold for 4100 gns to Mr Antony Colburn for his long established (est 1955) herd at Crickley Barrow. It is an honour to sell a bull to a herd held in such high regard by fellow breeders. It was the Colburns that bred Figurehead. Enhance managed to secure the second highest price for a bull on the day. Energize sold for a little less, 1700 gns! It would be untrue if we said we slightly disapointed with this but happy that the purchaser, Mr Chris Rudge of Baysham Herefords, took advice from one of our customers who is very pleased with the bull, Romany 1 Director, which he bought from us eighteen months ago. For photos of Ishbel and Enhance we would recommend you go to the farmers weekly website Both bulls were BVD, Lepto, IBR and Johnes tested free, BTV vaccinated and semen tested. A belt and braces approach to health and fertility will pay dividends, you would not drive a car without an MOT or fuel! This is a 2 year old Figurehead heifer's first calf by Romany 1 Asteroid A51 ET. His dam has a super udder with great teat size. His sire is an easy calving bull who we have used extensively on heifers, infact most of his 60 calves will be from heifers. Energize is in the top 5% of the breed for milk kg. This bull has been DNA tested by the society. This is the first, and only chance to take advantage of a unique piece of breeding. Enhance is the only son of Crickley 1 Figurehead and any of our Romany 1 Lucy family. This mating cannot be repeated. He combines genetics from two of the most successful sires from North America and the UK in Remitall Online (Canadian All Star Sire of Year 2004) and Crickley 1 Figurehead (UK Sire of The Year 2006-2007). The Lucy family is showing outstanding potential. After importing some embryos in 2003 and having three heifer calves we now have 10 Lucy females who all look like they are going to have a great future. For a breeder looking for a stockbull with a slightly different pedigree than normal then look no further! For a commercial, or pedigree producer looking for a bull with growth and milk then you've just found one with figures in the top 5% of the breed for 200 and 400 day growth, milk, eye muscle area, retail beef yield and self replacing index. This bull has been DNA tested both by the society and Igenity and he has been found to be homogeneous polled, so even put to a Longhorn or Highland he wouldn't sire calves with horns. Go ahead -Enhance your herd! PD incalf (due September) to SMH Calagry(P) one of our new stock bulls. An outstand female with terrific performance data. She is in the top 5% of breed for 400 and 600 day growth, Milk (kgs), eye muscle area and self replacing index. Her dam is a terrific breeder with two daughters already in the herd and two sons working as stock bulls. We have a full brother to Ishbel D45 who we plan to show this year. Her sire is making a major impression at Romany and is producing some terrific cattle for us. Back to: News & Sales Date: 04/10/2009 |
